How To

How to stain wood

Staining wood is the process of applying chemicals to the wood's exterior, which alters its color. This chemical reaction causes the wood to change from white to brownish red. While oak is the most widely used type of wood for staining purposes, other types of wood are also available.

There are several ways to apply stains to wood surfaces. Mixing the stain in a solvent such as turpentine and spraying it onto the wood is one method. You can also apply a solution containing water and dye directly to the wooden surface. The stain can be mixed with paints and varnishes to become part of the final coating.

The first step in staining wood is preparing the surface. Cleaning the wood thoroughly removes any dirt or grease that could interfere with applying the stain. Sanding smoothens scratches and rough spots. The next step is to choose the stain type you want. Penetrating stains are different from non-penetrating. Penetrating stains penetrate deeper than non-penetrating stains, which makes them great for dark colors like mahogany. Non-penetrating oils work best when used with light colors, like maple.

After choosing the type and application method you prefer, gather your tools. You can use a paintbrush to apply stains. This allows you spread the liquid evenly over the surface. To remove any stains left behind after painting, you will need some rags. You should have enough containers to store the various components of the stain mixture if you intend to mix it yourself.

Once you have prepared your materials, start by cleaning the area where you plan to stain the wood. Use warm water and soap to clean away dirt and dust. Use a dampened sponge and warm water to clean the entire piece. You should remove any debris, especially if your plan is to stain darker wood.

Apply the stain. The stain can be applied by spraying or brushing the stain onto one end of the furniture. Work slowly and carefully, moving back and forth along the grain of the wood until you reach the opposite end. The stain should not drip off of the wood's edge. Before moving on to the next steps, allow the stain drying completely.

Protect the painted surface with a coat polyurethane paint sealant. Three coats of polyurethane sealing agent are required. Allow the third coat to dry overnight before sanding the final coat.
