FAQ

How much should a woodworker charge per hour?

Hourly rates for professional woodworkers vary depending on many factors such as skill, experience, availability, geographical location, and other variables.

The average hourly rate for a skilled woodworker ranges from $20-$50 an hour.

A less skilled woodworker can charge as low at $10 an hour.

What would you recommend as a starting material for woodworking?

Start with softwoods such as pine and poplar. Once you feel comfortable with these two, move on to hardwood.

Where can I purchase hardwood lumber?

Home Depot sells hardwood lumber. They carry a variety of wood products such as flooring, cabinets, and furniture.

A wide range of engineered hardwoods are also available, such as Ipe and Brazilian Cherry (Pau d'Arco), Mahogany and Swietenia Macrophylla.

These woods can also be purchased online by simply searching Google for "hardwood timber"

How long does it usually take to complete a piece furniture?

It all depends on what type of wood you use, how complex your design is, and how much finishing you use. For example, hardwoods require more maintenance than softwoods. Hardwoods also tend to be more expensive than softwoods. They last longer and are more resistant to moisture. The process of finishing a piece of furniture typically takes anywhere from one week to three months.

What is the minimum amount I will need to start?

There are no exact numbers because every project is different. These are the factors that will give you an idea of how much you'll need.

  • Material costs
  • Tools and equipment
  • The time spent on the project
  • The hourly rate
  • How much profit can you anticipate to make
  • It doesn't matter if your goal is to hire help

You might start small if you are just starting out. As you gain experience, more difficult projects will become possible.

Can I make a living doing this?

Yes! Many woodworkers have this ability. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' (BLS), in May 2012 the median annual wage of woodworkers was $34,000 This is higher than the $31,000 annual national average.

What's the time taken to finish a piece furniture?

It depends on the size of the piece of furniture. For smaller projects such as picture frames and boxes, it can take less than a day to complete. Larger projects like dining tables and desks require several days. It takes time to stain and seal the wood properly.

How To

How to stain wooden surfaces

Stain wood is a process that involves applying chemicals to the surface of wood, which changes its color. This chemical reaction causes wood to turn from whiteish to brownish. Oak is the most commonly used wood for staining, but other woods can also be stained.

You can apply wood stains in many different ways. Some methods include mixing the stain along with a solvent like turpentine and then applying the mixture to the wood by brushing or spraying. Another method involves applying a solution of water to the wood. Stains can also be mixed into paints and varnishes, becoming part of the finish coating.

Preparing the wood surface is the first step to staining it. Cleaning the wood thoroughly removes any dirt or grease that could interfere with applying the stain. Sanding the wood smooths out rough spots and scratches. Then you must decide what kind of stain you want to use. There are two main kinds of stains available: non-penetrating stains and penetrating. Penetrating stain penetrates deeper into wood than nonpenetrating, making them suitable for dark colors like mahogany. Non-penetrating oils work best when used with light colors, like maple.

After deciding on the type of stain, you want to apply, prepare your tools. The best tool for applying stains is a paintbrush. It allows you to evenly distribute the liquid over the surface. You should also have some handy rags to wipe up excess stains after you finish painting. If you plan to mix the stain yourself, make sure you have enough containers available to hold the different components of the mixture.

After you have prepared your materials, clean the area you intend to stain. Use warm water and soap to clean away dirt and dust. Use a dampened sponge and warm water to clean the entire piece. Be sure to get rid of all loose material, especially if staining is planned for darker wood.

Next, apply the stain. Begin at one end and spray or brush the stain on the wood. Slowly and carefully work your way along the grain to reach the opposite end. You must be careful not to allow the stain to drip off the wood's edges. Allow the stain to dry completely before you move on to the next step.

A coat of clear polyurethane sealing agent is applied to protect the paint. Three coats are recommended for polyurethane. Allow the third coat, which should dry overnight, to dry before sanding.
