Crager and his wife, Tracie Dugas, have carved beautiful wood creations since the 1960s. They try to stay home as much as they can to do some staining or painting between shows. His daughters help out with staining or painting occasionally. White pine is preferred by them as it is lighter and less susceptible to cracking.

Crager was attracted to the art's unique style and he gave his boss his two-week notice.

The creation of small projects takes only an hour. However, larger carvings can take from 33 to 36 hours.

How To

How to join wood without using nails

Woodworking is a favorite hobby. Woodworking is a relaxing hobby that allows you to use your hands to create useful things from wood. You might want to join two pieces from the same wood, but you don't need to use nails. This article will help you to maintain the beauty of your woodwork projects.

First, remove any sharp edges from the wood pieces before you join them. Sharp corners can cause problems down the line. Once you have done that, you can begin gluing your boards together.

If you are working on hardwood, you should only use glue on one side. Use glue on both the sides for softwoods, such as cedar or pine. After applying the glue, press the boards firmly until they are completely stuck together. Be sure to let the glue dry before you move on to the next step.

Once you've glued your boards together you will need to drill holes in the joints to accommodate screws. The size of these holes depends on what type of screw you choose to use. If you are going to use a half-inch wood screw, you will need to drill at least 3/4 inch deep.

After drilling your holes, drive the screws into the board's backside. Avoid hitting the board's top surface. Otherwise, you could ruin the finish. Avoid hitting the screws' ends too often when driving screws. This will avoid splitting in the wood's ends grain.

You'll need to protect your completed project from the elements. You can seal the furniture pieces or cover the top. You will want to choose a product that will be durable for many years. Examples include oil-based varnishes and polyurethanes, shellac, lacquer and others.

These products can be found in most home improvement shops. It is important to ensure that you purchase the correct product for the job. Remember that some finishes can be toxic, so you should not use them indoors. So, always wear protective gear when handling them.
