Before you begin cutting, mark your grain with a pencil. Then draw a line following it. Once you've located the grain, approach the line by going straight up from the side of the box. Next, trim the carcass the same way. By doing this, you won’t have a large chunk on one side. This will result in a box that is round and easy to stack.

Bandsaw Spindle

Many woodworkers are not familiar with how to properly set up a bandsaw. They may not know to align the blade, or how to properly set the guide blocks and thrust bearing. All of these aspects have a cumulative effect on the performance of a bandsaw. To get a smooth, straight cut, use a wide bandsaw blade. Larger blades can cut through thicker materials more efficiently. The blade's number of teeth also influences the quality and efficiency of cuts. A bandsaw blade with more teeth will produce a finer cut.

Bandsaw blades can be made in various thicknesses. The stiffer and straighter your cut will become, the thicker the band. Thicker bands are more susceptible for stress cracking, but they can also breakage easily. You will therefore need a larger bandsaw. A blade should have a thickness of four to six inches. Use a knife holder to alter the direction of cuts.

Hand carved bowls

After serving in the United States Army, he retired from Pickens High School as a Captain in 1999. Ron enjoys woodworking, and teaches carving classes at Holly Springs Center in his free time.

The basics of wood carving will be taught to students. They will also learn how to use traditional wooden bowl carving tools to create a variety of designs. The shape and function of a bowl is directly affected by the tools and techniques used in hand carving. How To

How to make wood joints

This tutorial will help you join two pieces of wooden together. The "pocket hole joint" is a method whereby we drill holes into the wood and glue them together. If your wood has a straight grain, smooth surface, you can use this method. You might consider dowel joinery if your wood isn’t straight or flat. Here are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. First, measure the area where you wish to place the pocket joint. Then drill 3/4 inch deep holes into the ends of each piece of wood using a jig saw or handheld drilling machine.
  2. Sand Smooth. Sanding the edges of the wood will help to prevent the joint from splitting later.
  3. Glue Together. Apply glue to both the ends of the wood. Allow it to cool for at least 5 minutes before you attach the pieces.
  4. Fix the Pieces together. After the glue has dried you can attach the pieces to form a flush joint.
  5. Trim Joinery. Trim the excess wood around the joint after the glue has dried completely.

Make sure to leave enough room between the pieces so that you can turn them inside and out.
